Job Summary

The Business Continuity Specialist is responsible for ensuring the organization can maintain critical operations and quickly recover from disruptions, such as natural disasters, cyberattacks, or other emergencies. This role involves developing, testing, and maintaining business continuity plans (BCPs) and disaster recovery (DR) strategies while collaborating with various departments to mitigate risks and ensure operational resilience.

Key Responsibilities

1. Business Continuity Planning (BCP)

  • Develop, implement, and maintain business continuity plans for all critical business functions.
  • Conduct business impact analyses (BIAs) to identify critical operations and potential risks.
  • Define recovery time objectives (RTOs) and recovery point objectives (RPOs) for business processes.

2. Risk Assessment and Mitigation

  • Identify potential threats and vulnerabilities that could disrupt business operations.
  • Collaborate with risk management teams to mitigate identified risks.
  • Monitor emerging threats and update BCPs accordingly.

3. Disaster Recovery (DR) Coordination

  • Work closely with IT teams to develop and test disaster recovery strategies for systems and data.
  • Ensure DR plans align with overall business continuity objectives.
  • Verify the availability and reliability of backup systems and processes.

4. Testing and Training

  • Conduct regular testing of BCPs and DR plans, including table top exercises, simulations, and full-scale drills.
  • Document test results and recommend improvements based on findings.
  • Provide training to employees and stakeholders on business continuity roles and responsibilities.

5. Incident Response and Recovery

  • Act as a key resource during business disruptions, coordinating response efforts to minimize downtime.
  • Ensure smooth communication between teams and management during incidents.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the response and update plans as needed post-incident.

6. Policy and Compliance

  • Develop and enforce policies and procedures for business continuity and disaster recovery.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and industry best practices (e.g., ISO 22301).
  • Prepare documentation and reports for internal and external audits.

7. Reporting and Communication

  • Create and maintain detailed documentation for all continuity plans, processes, and test results.
  • Provide regular updates to management on the status of business continuity readiness.
  • Serve as a liaison between departments, ensuring alignment on continuity objectives.

8. Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies related to business continuity.
  • Propose enhancements to continuity and recovery strategies based on lessons learned and advancements.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Risk Management, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in business continuity, disaster recovery, or related roles.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP)
  • Associate Business Continuity Professional (ABCP)
  • ISO 22301 Lead Implementer
  • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)
  • ITIL Foundation Certification

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong understanding of business continuity and disaster recovery principles.
  • Knowledge of risk management frameworks and methodologies.
  • Proficiency in BCP/DR planning tools and software.
