Job Summary
The Cybersecurity Specialist is responsible for protecting an organization’s computer systems, networks, and sensitive data from cyber threats and unauthorized access. This role involves monitoring, analysing, and mitigating potential security risks, implementing robust security measures, and responding to cybersecurity incidents to minimize damage and recover systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. Security Operations and Monitoring
- Monitor networks and systems for security breaches, vulnerabilities, and suspicious activities.
- Analyze security alerts and respond to incidents using established protocols.
- Utilize security tools like SIEM systems, firewalls, and endpoint protection solutions to safeguard IT assets.
2. Threat Detection and Response
- Conduct vulnerability scans, penetration testing, and threat hunting activities.
- Identify and remediate security weaknesses and misconfigurations.
- Develop and execute incident response plans to contain and resolve security breaches.
3. Security Architecture and Implementation
- Assist in designing and implementing security infrastructure, including firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS).
- Ensure secure configuration and maintenance of systems and applications.
- Collaborate with IT teams to integrate security measures into system development lifecycles.
4. Policy and Compliance
- Ensure adherence to cybersecurity policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Maintain compliance with industry regulations and standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, ISO 27001, NIST).
- Prepare documentation and reports for audits and compliance reviews.
5. Employee Awareness and Training
- Educate employees about cybersecurity threats and best practices.
- Develop and deliver training sessions to enhance security awareness across the organization.
6. Research and Development
- Stay updated on emerging threats, vulnerabilities, and security technologies.
- Evaluate and recommend new security tools and methodologies to improve defenses.
- Test and implement updates, patches, and upgrades to maintain system security.
7. Collaboration and Reporting
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including IT, Legal, and HR, to address security concerns.
- Provide regular reports on cybersecurity status, incidents, and improvements to management.
- Act as a technical advisor during security-related projects and discussions.
Required Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in cybersecurity or related roles.
Certifications (Preferred)
- CompTIA Security+
- Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)
- Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
- GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC)
- Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)
Skills and Competencies
- In-depth knowledge of cybersecurity principles, frameworks, and tools.
- Strong understanding of network protocols, firewalls, and intrusion detection/prevention systems.
- Hands-on experience with SIEM tools, vulnerability scanners, and antivirus software.
- Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, PowerShell) and automation tools.
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities to assess threats and mitigate risks effectively.
- Excellent communication skills for explaining technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
